Your tarot year card is the Major Arcana card that sets your theme for one year. It comes from your birth month + birth day + the year, with the digits of the total added until you reach 22 or below. Born April 15, your 2026 card is 4 + 15 + 2026 = 2045, then 2 + 0 + 4 + 5 = 11, Justice. Year cards use Rider-Waite-Smith numbering (8 is Strength, 11 is Justice), and a total of exactly 22 is the Fool.
To skip the arithmetic, the tarot year card calculator gives you this year’s card and the next ten. This page covers what sits behind the number.
Why only some cards can be year cards
Because the total is always a number in the low 2000s, year cards cluster in the middle of the deck. In 2026, every possible birthday gives a card from 5 (the Hierophant) to 17 (the Star). Across the whole century from 2001 to 2100, personal year cards only run from 3 (the Empress) to 20 (Judgement). The Magician, the High Priestess, the World and the Fool can’t appear. That’s a quirk of the arithmetic.
Where does the year card method come from?
Mary K. Greer introduced year cards in Tarot for Your Self (1984), alongside the tarot birth cards, and expanded them in Who Are You in the Tarot? (2011). The idea is simple. Your birth cards describe lifelong themes, and the year card shows which theme is in focus right now. Some readers compare it to astrology: the birth cards are like a natal chart, and the year card is like the chart for one birthday-to-birthday year.
There’s a neat link between the two. The year card formula is the birth card formula with a different year plugged in, so your year card in the year you were born is your personality card. Born April 15, 1990: 4 + 15 + 1990 = 2009, and 2 + 0 + 0 + 9 = 11, Justice. That was this person’s year card in 1990, and it returns as their year card in 2026. Years when your year card matches a birth card are often read as especially important.
Calendar timing or birthday timing
Readers use two timings and don’t fully agree. The calculator on this site uses the calendar year.
- Calendar year. You use the 2026 card from January 1 to December 31, 2026. It’s the easiest to track.
- Birthday year. Your 2026 card starts on your 2026 birthday and runs until the day before your 2027 birthday. Before your birthday, you’re still in your 2025 card.
For someone born April 15, the two timings look like this:
| Dates | Calendar timing | Birthday timing |
|---|---|---|
| January 1 to April 14, 2026 | 11 Justice (2026) | 10 Wheel of Fortune (2025: 4 + 15 + 2025 = 2044) |
| April 15 to December 31, 2026 | 11 Justice | 11 Justice |
| January 1 to April 14, 2027 | 12 Hanged Man (2027: 4 + 15 + 2027 = 2046) | 11 Justice |
Some readers split the difference: calendar timing for birthdays early in the year, birthday timing for late ones. Whatever you pick, keep it for several years so your notes compare like with like.
The rise-and-reset pattern across a decade
Each new year adds 1 to the total, so your card usually rises by one. Born April 15, the cards run 10 (2025), 11 (2026), 12 (2027), 13 (2028), 14 (2029) and 15 (2030). Then 2031 gives 4 + 15 + 2031 = 2050, and 2 + 0 + 5 + 0 = 7, the Chariot. Whenever the total crosses a multiple of ten, the digit sum drops and the sequence restarts lower.
Two things follow from this:
- You never get the same card two years running. Adding 1 either raises the digit sum by one or drops it by eight or more, so it always changes.
- The cards mostly follow the order of the Major Arcana. A Hanged Man year often follows a Justice year, and Death follows the Hanged Man. Looking at the cards either side of this year shows what you’re leaving behind and where you’re heading. Major Arcana in Order shows the full sequence.
Reading your card inside the collective card
The year itself has a collective card, the digit sum of the year (2026 adds up to 10, the Wheel of Fortune). Every collective card is on the tarot card of the year page. To combine the two, read your personal card inside the collective one. A personal Justice year inside a collective Wheel year might be a time for fair decisions and clear agreements while things around you keep shifting. When your personal card matches the collective card, the theme is doubled.
Year card and numerology personal year
The personal year number uses the same sum, birth month + birth day + calendar year, but reduces it all the way to a single digit from 1 to 9. Digit sums keep the same remainder after dividing by 9, so your year card always reduces to your personal year number (master numbers aside). For a March 15 birthday in 2026, the sum is 2044: year card 10, the Wheel of Fortune, and 1 + 0 = 1, personal year 1.
The two answer different questions. The card gives you an image and a story for the year. The number tells you where you stand in a nine-year cycle, and it repeats on a steady rhythm while the card rises and resets. A Wheel of Fortune card in a personal year 1 reads as a fresh cycle that opens with a lucky break or a sudden turn.
How do you work out your tarot month cards?
You can break a year into months with a personal month card. This site uses a Greer-style method:
Month card = your year card number + the calendar month number, reduced to 22 or below.
For a year card of 11 (Justice):
| Month | Calculation | Month card |
|---|---|---|
| January | 11 + 1 = 12 | 12 The Hanged Man |
| March | 11 + 3 = 14 | 14 Temperance |
| June | 11 + 6 = 17 | 17 The Star |
| October | 11 + 10 = 21 | 21 The World |
| December | 11 + 12 = 23, then 2 + 3 = 5 | 5 The Hierophant |
Month cards can reach the high cards (18 to 22) that year cards rarely touch, and a sum of exactly 22 gives the Fool. Some readers use a different version that adds your birth month, birth day, the calendar month and the year together, so check which one a source uses before comparing. The tarot month card calculator shows all twelve at once.
Living with your year card, January to December
At the start of the year
- Read the card’s meanings, both the upright themes and the shadow side. Each card has a page in the Major Arcana library.
- Write one sentence of intention in the card’s language. For Justice: “This year I make decisions I can stand behind.”
- Lay a spread. The year ahead tarot spread works well with your year card placed face up as the center card.
During the year
- Notice when the theme appears. Jot a line when events, conversations or moods seem to echo the card.
- Use month cards as sub-themes. A Star month inside a Justice year might be a time to stay hopeful about a fair outcome.
At the end of the year
- Review your notes. Which parts of the card’s meaning were most visible? Which never appeared?
- Look ahead one card. Read next year’s card before January so the change doesn’t catch you off guard.
How year cards connect to your birth cards
Year cards belong to the same constellations as birth cards: the groups of cards that reduce to the same digit, such as 2-11-20 or 1-10-19. A Justice (11) year sits with the High Priestess (2) and Judgement (20). If one of those is your birth card, the year is often read as a time when your own lifelong theme is switched on. A year card that matches your hidden factor card can be a year to learn that card’s lesson directly.
Each group is laid out in the guide to tarot constellations, and since a year card can match either of your two birth cards, it helps to know how personality and soul cards differ. If you also use a destiny matrix, its age points are a separate system with different numbering (8 Justice, 11 Strength). To see your next ten year cards in one list, use the year card calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Does everyone with my birthday have the same year card?
Yes. The year card uses your birth month and day but not your birth year, so everyone born on March 15 shares the same card in 2026, whatever their age. What differs is the life each person brings to it. A Justice year for a student and for a retiree will play out in quite different decisions.
Can I work out my year cards for past years?
Yes. Add your birth month and day to any past year and reduce as usual. Many readers list their year cards for the last ten or twenty years next to what happened in each. It's one of the quickest ways to see whether the cards match your own life, and it gives you a personal sense of what each card feels like.
Is a difficult year card a bad omen?
No. A year card is a theme to reflect on, not a prediction. Death as a year card is traditionally read as a year of endings that make room for something new, and the Tower as a year of sudden, overdue change. The so-called hard cards often bring the most useful years, especially when you work with the theme deliberately.
