What is a tarot year card?
A tarot year card is the Major Arcana card you get from your birthday and a calendar year. Mary K. Greer popularized it as the yearly partner to your tarot birth cards. Your birth cards describe lifelong themes. Your year card describes the one lesson that sits in the foreground for twelve months.
If you know astrology, the birth card works like your natal chart and the year card like a solar return for one year. It does not predict events. It names the theme you are likely to keep bumping into, so you can meet it prepared.
How to calculate your tarot year card
- Add your birth month + birth day + the year you want, as whole numbers.
- Add the digits of the total.
- If the answer is above 22, add its digits again.
- Match the number to the Major Arcana. 22 is The Fool.
Worked example: March 15, for 2026
3 + 15 + 2026 = 2044 → 2 + 0 + 4 + 4 = 10
The 2026 year card for anyone born on March 15 is 10, Wheel of Fortune. In 2027 it moves to 11, Justice (3 + 15 + 2027 = 2045 → 11).
Your birth year is not part of the sum, so everyone who shares your birthday has the same year card. The card runs from January 1 to December 31 here. If you would rather start it on your birthday, or want to know why your card sometimes drops back several steps, tarot year cards explained covers both.

A seven-card spread around your year card
Once you have your card, place it in the center, shuffle the rest of the deck and lay seven cards around it. Do it in January, and again in July to see what has shifted.
- What this year’s theme looks like in my life
- The lesson I need to learn
- An opportunity to say yes to
- A challenge to prepare for
- The best way to approach the year
- Where I can grow
- What I take with me at the end

If you get a hard year card
Death, the Tower and the Devil are the year cards people worry about most. All three can come up between 2020 and 2035, and none of them predicts disaster. They describe the kind of work the year asks of you.
- Death year (13): a clearing year. Something finishes so something else can start: a job, a home, a habit, a version of yourself. It goes better when you choose what to end, before circumstances choose for you.
- Tower year (16): a truth-telling year. Plans built on shaky ground get tested. Fix the cracks you already know about early in the year, and leave room in your budget and calendar for surprises.
- Devil year (15): a year about attachments. Money, desire, habits and power all come into focus. Find the thing that has too much hold on you, and loosen it.
- Hanged Man year (12): a pause year. Progress is meant to feel slow. Use it to learn, rethink and wait for the right moment instead of forcing it.
A hard card often lands after an easy one. Look at your ten-year view when you calculate: the card that follows usually shows what the difficult year was making room for.
The year itself also has a collective card, the same for everyone. The tarot card of the year page lists them, and the box under your result shows the one for the year you picked.
Does my birth year change my year card?
No. The year card uses only your birth month and day plus the year you are reading, so everyone who shares your birthday gets the same year card, whatever year they were born. Your birth year matters for your birth cards, not your year card.
Can I get the same year card two years in a row?
No. Moving to the next year adds 1 to the total, which either moves your card up one step or, when the year’s last digit rolls over, drops it back several steps. In over a century of dates there is no birthday that keeps the same card for two years running.
Which tarot year card is the luckiest?
The Sun, The Star, the Wheel of Fortune and The World are the year cards people usually welcome most. Between 2020 and 2035 only the Wheel and The Star are possible as personal cards. A harder card is not an unlucky year so much as a year with clearer work to do; see hard year cards.
Why does another site give me a different year card?
There are three common methods. We use Greer’s: month + day + year, then add the digits. Some sites add every digit of the date one by one, and one variant subtracts 22 until the number fits. The same birthday can get three different cards, so all three are shown under your result. See why calculators disagree.
Why can’t my year card be The Fool, The Magician or The World?
Between 2020 and 2035, month + day + year always lands between 2022 and 2078, and those totals only reduce to numbers between 5 and 17. So nobody gets cards 1 to 4 or 18 to 22 as a year card in this period. Those cards still turn up as year cards in earlier decades, and as collective cards of the year.
What if my birthday is February 29?
Use 2 + 29 every year, even in years without a February 29. The year card only needs the numbers of your birthday, not the date existing that year. For 2026: 2 + 29 + 2026 = 2057 → 2 + 0 + 5 + 7 = 14, Temperance.
Should I read my year card upright or reversed?
Upright: it comes from a sum, not a draw. If the year feels like it is going badly, read the card’s reversed meaning as a picture of the theme resisted or overdone, and use that as a prompt to adjust.
