What are tarot birth cards?

Tarot birth cards are the Major Arcana cards your date of birth adds up to. The method comes from Mary K. Greer, who built on Angeles Arrien’s work in Tarot for Your Self (1984) and expanded it in Who Are You in the Tarot? (2011). Think of them as a sun sign for tarot: a fixed reference point, not a prediction.

Most people get two cards:

  • Personality card (10 to 22): how your life lesson looks day to day. Other people usually recognize it in you.
  • Soul card (1 to 9): the root underneath, the purpose you keep coming back to. It is quieter and more private.

About six in ten people get a single card, because their total is already 9 or less. A few get three. The personality card vs soul card guide explains how to read the two together.

How to calculate your tarot birth cards

  1. Add your birth month + day + four-digit year as whole numbers.
  2. Add the digits of that total. If the answer is above 22, add its digits again.
  3. The number you land on (1 to 22) is your personality card. 22 is The Fool.
  4. Add the digits of the personality number until you reach a single digit. That is your soul card.

Example 1: two cards (April 13, 1975)

4 + 13 + 1975 = 1992 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21 → 2 + 1 = 3

Personality card 21, The World. Soul card 3, The Empress.

Example 2: three cards (March 2, 1985)

3 + 2 + 1985 = 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1

19 is the only total that steps down twice, so this person has three cards: The Sun, Wheel of Fortune and The Magician. The Wheel sits in the middle as a bridge.

Example 3: one card (July 22, 1986)

7 + 22 + 1986 = 2015 → 2 + 0 + 1 + 5 = 8

The total is already a single digit, so Strength is both the personality and the soul card. A single card is not weaker. It means your outer style and inner purpose pull the same way.

Why another calculator may give a different card

Some sites add month + day + the first two digits of the year + the last two (April 13, 1975: 4 + 13 + 19 + 75 = 111 → 3). Others add all eight digits one at a time. Both shortcuts always give the same soul card as Greer’s method, but they can give a different personality card, as here: 3 instead of 21. Your result shows every method side by side. Why calculators disagree goes through each one.

All 22 possible birth card results

Every birth date gives one of these 22 results: a single card from 1 to 9, a pair, or the Sun, Wheel and Magician trio. The share column shows how common each one is for people born from 1950 to 2010; the last number is always the soul card.

Cards 10 to 22 only ever appear as personality cards, because they always reduce to a smaller soul number. Cards 1 to 9 can be either. Read your pair in depth on the birth card pairs page.

Your constellation and hidden factor card

Your soul card belongs to a constellation: the cards that reduce to the same single digit. Any card in it that is not one of your birth cards is your hidden factor or teacher card, a quality you tend to meet in other people or hard situations before you see it in yourself.

SoulConstellationTheme
1The Magician, Wheel of Fortune, The SunWill and new starts
2The High Priestess, Justice, JudgementIntuition and fairness
3The Empress, The Hanged Man, The WorldCreativity and growth
4The Emperor, Death, The FoolStructure, endings and fresh starts
5The Hierophant, TemperanceLearning and teaching
6The Lovers, The DevilLove, values and attachment
7The Chariot, The TowerDrive and sudden change
8Strength, The StarCourage and hope
9The Hermit, The MoonWisdom and the unknown

Constellations 1 to 4 have three cards, so they usually leave a hidden factor. Constellations 5 to 9 have two; if both are your birth cards, you have none. The constellations and hidden factor guide covers each one.

Birth cards vs other tarot cards from your birthday

Your birthday can point to several different Major Arcana cards. They answer different questions:

CardWorked out fromChanges?
Birth cards (this page)Month + day + year, reduced to 22, then to one digitNever
Arcana numberAll eight digits of the date, added one by oneNever
Year cardBirth month + day + the current yearEvery January 1
Zodiac cardYour sun sign, not the numbersNever

A year card that matches one of your birth cards often marks a year that feels like a turning point.

How to use your birth cards

  • Look at the images. Open both card pages and note the first detail you notice. It often points to what matters for you right now.
  • Ask three questions. Where do I see this card in my life? Where do I resist it? What would the healthiest version look like for me?
  • Compare the pair. Note how the two cards differ. The friction between them is usually your life lesson.
  • Watch for them in readings. When a birth card turns up in a spread, many readers take it as a sign the question touches something central to you.

For journaling prompts and a five-card spread, read how to work with your birth card.

Strength 8 or 11?

This calculator uses Rider-Waite-Smith numbering, as Greer does: Strength is 8 and Justice is 11. Marseille-style decks swap them. If your deck follows the Marseille order, read your number against your own deck. See Strength 8 or Justice 11 for the history.

Which tarot birth cards are rarest?

Among birth dates from 1950 to 2010, The Devil and The Lovers (15 and 6) is the rarest result, at about 1 date in 1,700, followed by The Tower and The Chariot (16 and 7) at about 1 in 500. The Magician on its own, as a single birth card, does not occur at all in that period.

Why can’t people born after 1991 get The World or The Fool?

Because of how the digits fall. The World and Empress pair last appears for births in 1990, and The Fool and Emperor in 1991; neither comes back before 2100. From 1992 on, month + day + year always reduces to 20 or less. The Moon and The Hermit disappear for births from 1979 to 2035, and the Sun, Wheel and Magician trio from 1989 to 2045. The birth card pairs page covers every combination.

Are birth cards read upright or reversed?

Upright. They come from a sum, not a shuffle, so there is no reversal. The reversed meaning is still worth reading, because it shows how your card tends to go wrong when you are stressed or out of balance.

Is my tarot birth card the same as my zodiac tarot card?

No. Birth cards come from the numbers in your birth date. Your zodiac card comes from your sun sign through the Golden Dawn correspondences, so an Aries is always The Emperor whatever the date adds up to. Find yours with the zodiac tarot card finder.

Do my birth cards ever change?

No. They come from your birth date, so they stay the same for life. The card that changes is your year card, which swaps your birth year for the current year. Many readers say your birth cards feel truer as you get older, with the soul card coming forward in midlife.

Can couples compare their birth cards?

Yes. Two people who share a soul number belong to the same constellation, which tends to give them an easy shared language. To read two dates together, the arcana compatibility calculator adds both dates into a single couple card.
