How the zodiac tarot card calculator works
The calculator works in three steps, using the Golden Dawn system that most modern decks follow:
- Your birthday gives your Sun sign, using the usual date ranges in the table below.
- Your sign gives two Major Arcana cards: the card for the sign itself and the card for its traditional ruling planet.
- Your birthday also falls in one of the sign's three decans, ten-day slices that each have a numbered Minor Arcana card from 2 to 10.
Worked example: March 15 falls in Pisces (February 19 to March 20), so the sign card is The Moon. Pisces is ruled by Jupiter, whose card is the Wheel of Fortune. March 15 sits in the third Pisces decan (March 11 to 20), ruled by Mars, which gives the Ten of Cups.

Born on the cusp?
The dates above are averages. The Sun moves into a new sign on a slightly different day each year, and the time of day matters too, so a birthday within a day or two of a change can belong to either sign. Aries is the clearest case: in most recent years the Sun has entered Aries on March 20, not March 21.
If your birthday is within two days of a sign change, the calculator flags it and shows the cards for the neighboring sign as well. To settle it, look up your Sun sign in a birth chart made with your birth year, time and place. Until then, read both sets of cards and notice which one sounds like you.
Reading your result: sign, planet and decan
Your sign card describes the style of your Sun sign: how you go about things. Your planet card is the force behind it. Your decan card narrows it down to the ten days you were born in, so two people of the same sign can get a different third card.
Take a Libra born on October 5. Justice gives the sign's sense of fairness and balance. The Empress, for Venus, adds warmth and a love of beauty. The decan card is the Three of Swords, Saturn in Libra: the hurt that comes when harmony meets a hard limit. Read together, that is a person who wants things fair and lovely, and whose growth comes from facing the moments when they can't be.
Why each sign got its card, plus the element and court cards for every sign, is explained in zodiac signs and tarot cards. The dates for all 36 decans are in the tarot timing chart.
Which signs share the same planet card?
Five planets rule two signs each, so those signs share a planet card: Mercury (Gemini and Virgo) gives The Magician, Venus (Taurus and Libra) The Empress, Mars (Aries and Scorpio) The Tower, Jupiter (Sagittarius and Pisces) the Wheel of Fortune, and Saturn (Capricorn and Aquarius) The World. Leo has The Sun to itself and Cancer The High Priestess.
Why is Scorpio’s planet card The Tower and not Judgement?
This calculator uses the traditional rulers the Golden Dawn worked with, and Mars rules Scorpio there. Modern astrology gives Scorpio to Pluto, Aquarius to Uranus and Pisces to Neptune, and some readers then use Judgement, The Fool and The Hanged Man as those planets’ cards. Both views are in use; pick the one your deck or teacher follows.
What tarot card is my moon sign or rising sign?
Use the same table. If your Moon is in Scorpio, your moon-sign card is Death; if your rising sign is Libra, your rising-sign card is Justice. Readers who use all three often treat the Sun card as your core style, the Moon card as your emotional life and the rising card as the first impression you give.
Do these zodiac cards work with the Thoth or Marseille deck?
Yes. The Thoth deck uses the same Golden Dawn sign pairings, though some cards have new names there: Strength is Lust, Justice is Adjustment and Temperance is Art. Marseille decks swap the numbers of Strength and Justice but not their signs, so Leo is still Strength and Libra is still Justice.
Why is my zodiac card different from my tarot birth card?
They come from different systems. Your zodiac card comes from astrology: where the Sun was on your birthday. Your tarot birth cards and arcana number come from numerology, by adding the digits of your birth date. Most people get different cards from each, and that is expected. Read them as two views of the same person.
