What is a tarot month card?

A tarot month card is the Major Arcana card that sets the tone of one calendar month for you. It sits inside your tarot year card: the year card is the lesson for the whole year, and the month card is the shape that lesson takes for those four weeks.

Because each month adds one more than the last, your cards walk forward through the Major Arcana and wrap around after 22. A quiet Hermit month of planning is often followed by a Wheel of Fortune month where things start to move.

How to calculate your tarot month card

  1. Find your year card: birth month + birth day + the year, then add the digits until you reach 22 or less.
  2. Add the month number (January = 1, December = 12).
  3. If the total is above 22, add its digits. 22 is The Fool.

Worked example: April 15, for 2026

4 + 15 + 2026 = 2045 → 2 + 0 + 4 + 5 = 11

The year card is 11, Justice. Each month adds its number:

MonthWorkingMonth card
January11 + 1 = 12The Hanged Man
February11 + 2 = 13Death
March11 + 3 = 14Temperance
April11 + 4 = 15The Devil
May11 + 5 = 16The Tower
June11 + 6 = 17The Star
July11 + 7 = 18The Moon
August11 + 8 = 19The Sun
September11 + 9 = 20Judgement
October11 + 10 = 21The World
November11 + 11 = 22The Fool
December11 + 12 = 23; 23 → 2 + 3 = 5The Hierophant

The full method, and where it comes from, is in tarot year cards explained.

Why another site may show a different month card

A second method skips the year card and adds everything at once: birth month + birth day + the month + the digits of the year. For April 15 in January 2026 that gives 4 + 15 + 1 + 10 = 30 → 3 + 0 = 3, The Empress, where this calculator gives The Hanged Man. Both are in use. This calculator follows the year card chain because it keeps every month tied to your year card. Your result lets you compare the two side by side.

How to use your month cards

  • On the 1st, look up the card and choose a practical thing it suggests. A Chariot month might be the time to push a project forward; a Temperance month might call for a steadier routine.
  • Mid-month, notice where the card’s theme has turned up so far.
  • At month’s end, write two lines about what happened. After a year you have a short diary of how your year card played out.
  • Plan ahead. If a Tower or Death month is coming, finish loose ends beforehand. These cards usually mean change, not disaster.

Can a month card be the same as my year card?

No. Adding a month number always moves the total away from your year card, and for every birthday from 2020 to 2035 none of the twelve month cards repeats the year card. Each month shows a different side of the year’s theme.

Can my month card be The Fool?

Yes. When your year card number plus the month number comes to exactly 22, that month’s card is The Fool. For a Wheel of Fortune year (10), that happens in December. A Fool month is usually read as a good time for a fresh start or a small leap.

Do people born in different years get different month cards?

No. Month cards come from your year card, which uses only your birth month and day, so everyone who shares your birthday has the same twelve cards in a given year.

Is a month card the same as a personal month in numerology?

They are close cousins. A numerology personal month adds the month to your personal year and reduces to 1–9. The tarot month card does the same with your year card but keeps numbers up to 22, so you get a full Major Arcana card. Compare with the personal year calculator.
