How you get this pair
Add the month, day and full year, then add the digits of the total. For November 28, 1990: 11 + 28 + 1990 = 2029, and 2 + 0 + 2 + 9 = 13, Death, your personality card. Then 1 + 3 = 4 gives the Emperor, your soul card.
Under Greer's method the pair appears for people born from 1986 onward and for people born before 1929, but not in between.
If you only know your birthday, work out your birth cards first. The method we use is Mary K. Greer’s.
How the cards work together
In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, Death is a skeleton in black armor on a white horse, carrying a banner with a white rose. A king lies fallen, a child and a bishop face the rider, and the sun rises between two towers. The message is that change reaches everyone and something follows it. The Emperor sits on a stone throne carved with rams' heads, armored under his robe, in front of bare mountains. He is order, rules and the ability to build.
With Death as your personality, you may be the person who ends what others are afraid to end: the project that is failing, the habit, the outdated system. Your life may move in distinct chapters with clean breaks between them. The Emperor soul explains why. The clearing serves the building. Your deeper aim is to create structures, such as a business, a household, a team or a personal discipline, that fit the next stage.
In balance this pair is a practical reformer. Out of balance, Death cuts ties too fast, and the Emperor grips control to manage the unease that follows. One habit helps a lot: pair every ending with a plan for what goes in the empty space.

Death & The Emperor in love
You bring loyalty, protectiveness and depth. The Emperor wants to provide stability and keep its word; Death is not afraid of intense conversations or big shifts. Your relationships may come in distinct phases, and a major breakup can change how you choose partners afterward.
Watch for control. The Emperor can try to organize a partner's life, and Death can end something before talking it through. Relationships thrive when you let them change shape over time while keeping a solid core of trust.
Death & The Emperor at work
Work that involves restructuring and long-term building suits you: change and project management, operations, engineering, construction, law, hospice and palliative care, surgery, emergency services, archives and renovation. You often do well in roles where you inherit a mess and leave behind a system that works, including turning around a struggling business.
The caution is rigidity. Once you have built something, let Death review it again. A yearly audit of your own routines keeps the Emperor from becoming the thing Death would clear away.
Hidden factor cards
Your constellation is 4-13-22, and the member you do not hold is the Fool, which counts as 22 in Greer's arithmetic and is printed as 0. In her framework this hidden factor card is a quality you meet through experience before you claim it. For Death and Emperor people, the Fool brings play, spontaneity and trust in the unknown, all things a decisive, structured temperament can neglect. Its lesson is to start something without a full plan. See The Fool and is the Fool 0 or 22?.
Growing with this pair
Give endings a ritual. Before you close a chapter, list what it gave you and what you are taking forward. Grief that has a place does not leak into the next structure you build.
Loosen control deliberately. Each season, find an area where someone else leads or where you follow a plan you did not design. And invite the hidden Fool in through small experiments: a class, a trip, a hobby you are bad at. The personality card vs soul card guide explains how the two roles fit together.
Questions to journal on
- What in my life has already ended, even if I have not admitted it yet?
- What structure would serve the next chapter better than the one I have now?
- Where do I hold on to control because change feels unsafe?
- What could I try this month with no plan and no need to be good at it?
Frequently asked questions
Is Death a bad birth card to have?
No. In tarot the Death card stands for endings and transitions, not literal death. As a personality card it often describes someone who handles change well and keeps renewing their life. Paired with the Emperor, the emphasis is on building something solid after each ending.
Why does another calculator give me a different pair?
Some sites add month, day and the two halves of the year. Across every date from 1900 to 2030, about 85 percent of people Greer places at Death also get 13 that way, and most of the rest get the Emperor alone. People Greer places at the Fool and the Emperor often see Death and the Emperor elsewhere. Why arcana calculators disagree compares the methods side by side.
