How you get this pair
Add the month, day and full year, then add the digits. For March 7, 1940: 3 + 7 + 1940 = 1950, and 1 + 9 + 5 + 0 = 15, the Devil, your personality card. Then 1 + 5 = 6 gives the Lovers, your soul card.
Children born from 2006 onward can get the pair again. April 22, 2023 gives 4 + 22 + 2023 = 2049, and 2 + 0 + 4 + 9 = 15.

How the cards work together
The Rider-Waite-Smith Devil shows a horned figure on a dark block, with a man and woman loosely chained below. The chains are wide enough to slip off, and many readers take that as the card's key point: much of what holds us is held in place by our own consent. The Lovers shows a similar couple, now free and unclothed in a garden under an angel. Smith drew the two cards as mirror images, and Greer's arithmetic links them too, since 15 reduces to 6.
With the Devil as your personality, you may seem intense and charismatic, and comfortable talking about money, sex, power or appetite, subjects others avoid. You may also form strong attachments to people, habits, possessions or status. The Lovers soul asks for real choices that match your values, and bonds formed from freedom.
In balance this pair is unusually frank about desire and capable of great loyalty. Out of balance it can mean staying stuck in something that feels compelling but limits you, or mistaking intensity for intimacy. Each time you notice a chain and decide whether to keep it, the Devil is serving the Lovers.

The Devil & The Lovers in love
Love is often central for you. The Lovers soul looks for a union built on shared values, and the Devil brings passion and chemistry. You may feel attraction strongly and commit hard.
The thing to watch is a relationship that runs on intensity or dependence instead of choice. One test is to ask whether you would choose this relationship freely if the fear of losing it disappeared. When the answer is yes, this pair can offer a frank, sensual and loyal partnership, where jealousy, desire and power can be talked about without shame.
The Devil & The Lovers at work
Work with resources, persuasion or human desire can suit you: finance, sales, marketing, negotiation, luxury goods, hospitality, fashion, entertainment and owning a business. The Lovers side needs work that fits your values, so ethics matter. Addiction recovery work, counseling and coaching also suit this pair, because you understand attachment from the inside.
The main caution is golden handcuffs, a well-paid role that conflicts with your values. Every few years, ask whether your work is still a choice or has become a chain.
Hidden factor cards
You have no hidden factor card. Your constellation is just 6 and 15, since the next number that reduces to 6 would be 24 and the Major Arcana end at 22. That makes this a closed loop: the Devil shows you what you are attached to, and the Lovers makes you choose. Your personal year cards bring other cards into focus from year to year. The guide to constellations and hidden factor cards lists every group.
Growing with this pair
Take a chain inventory. List the habits, relationships and commitments that feel hardest to leave, and beside each one, write whether you would choose it again today. You do not have to change anything right away; seeing it clearly loosens it.
Then do the Lovers' work: name three values that guide your choices and test big decisions against them. Finally, drop the shame around appetite. Desire is not the problem in this pair; unexamined desire is. The guide to working with your birth card has more exercises.
Questions to journal on
- Which attachments would I choose again freely, and which are loose chains I have stopped noticing?
- What do I want, and where do I feel ashamed of wanting it?
- When have I confused intensity with intimacy?
- Which three values do I want every big choice to honor?
Frequently asked questions
Is the Devil a bad birth card?
No. In tarot the Devil stands for attachment, desire and material life, which are part of being human. As a personality card it often describes someone charismatic and open about appetite. Paired with the Lovers, the focus is choice: the loose chains on the card suggest freedom is available once you see what holds you.
Why is the Devil and Lovers pair so rare?
It comes down to arithmetic. A personality card of 15 needs a month, day and year total whose digits add to exactly 15, such as 1950 or 2049. People born from 1949 to 2005 have totals from about 1951 to 2048, and none of those has a digit sum of 15.
Another calculator gave me only the Lovers. Why?
Some sites add month, day and the two halves of the year. For dates Greer's method takes to 15, that method lands on 6 more often than not; across 1900 to 2030 it agrees with Greer only about 43 percent of the time. The two methods are compared in why calculators give different results.
