Why The Emperor is the card of Aries
The Golden Dawn gave each of the twelve signs one of the twelve "single" letters of the Hebrew alphabet, and each letter already belonged to a trump. The Emperor carries Heh, which means window: a ruler looking out over land he intends to organize.
Pamela Colman Smith made the link easy to see in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. She put rams' heads on the Emperor's stone throne, dressed him in red over a suit of armor and set him against bare mountains. Aries opens the astrological year at the spring equinox, and the Emperor is the card of founding things: drawing borders, writing the rules and taking charge of new ground.
Aleister Crowley's Thoth deck later swapped the Hebrew letters of the Emperor and the Star, but Crowley kept the Emperor with Aries. Whichever of the two decks you use, the Aries card is the same.
What The Emperor says about Aries
Aries likes to go first. The Emperor adds a second instinct: once you have started something, you want to be the one who shapes it. Think of the friend who books the trip, plans the route and checks, without making a fuss, that everyone has a ride home. That mix of speed and responsibility is the Aries version of the Emperor.
Mars, through the Tower, supplies the push. The Emperor supplies the frame that keeps the push from scattering. Aries people who use both tend to be strong founders and fair captains, protective of the people on their team and blunt with anyone who threatens them. The quality the card asks Aries to grow is staying power, because the Ram's interest often peaks in the first week of any project.
Aries and The Emperor in love
Aries tends to show love by doing. You fix the flat tire before your partner has finished describing it, plan the weekend away, and stand up for the people you love in public. The Emperor adds loyalty and a wish to provide.
The risk is deciding for two people instead of with them. A partner may enjoy being looked after and still resent never getting a vote. Aries relationships tend to work best when arguments are short and direct, decisions are shared, and there is always something new to do together. Patience in the slow middle stretch of a relationship is the Aries test.
Aries and The Emperor at work
The Emperor points Aries toward work where you can set direction and see results quickly. Starting a business, leading a team through a launch, emergency response, competitive sales, coaching and sport all suit cardinal fire. Aries tends to be at its best in the first phase of a project, when there are decisions to make and nothing yet exists.
The weak spot is the long middle. Many Aries do well by pairing with someone who enjoys maintenance and process. Clashes with other authority figures are common too: two Emperors in one office rarely share the throne happily, so roles with real autonomy tend to suit you better than tight hierarchies.
The Aries shadow side
The Emperor's shadow is authority without warmth. For Aries this looks like impatience, a short fuse, steamrolling slower people or refusing to admit a mistake. Mars pushed too hard becomes recklessness.
Your planet card, the Tower, shows where that leads: something built fast and forced into place, then knocked down. Two habits help. Wait a night before sending the angry message. And treat pushback as information about the plan, not a challenge to you. The fire is the gift; it only needs a hearth.
Your Aries decan card
Aries rules the first three pip cards of Wands, each tied to about ten days of the sign. If you were born about March 21 to 30, your decan card is the 2 of Wands (Mars in Aries, which the Golden Dawn titled Dominion). About March 31 to April 9 is the 3 of Wands (Sun in Aries, Established Strength). About April 10 to 19 is the 4 of Wands (Venus in Aries, Perfected Work).
Read in order, they tell the Aries story: claim the ground, expand from it, then stop and celebrate what you built. The dates shift by a day in some years, so if you were born on a boundary, a birth chart will show the exact degree of your Sun.
Working with your sign card
- At the start of Aries season, around March 21, put the Emperor where you will see it and decide on a structure you want to build this year, such as a savings habit, a business plan or a training schedule.
- When you feel the urge to force something, lay the Tower next to the Emperor and ask: is this built on solid ground, or am I pushing it into place?
- Use your three decan cards as a spread for a new project: the 2 of Wands for what you are claiming, the 3 for how it will grow, the 4 for what finished looks like.
- Once a year, journal on one question: where do I lead fairly, and where do I just insist?
Frequently asked questions
What tarot card is Aries?
In the Golden Dawn system used by most modern decks, the tarot card for Aries is The Emperor, card 4 of the Major Arcana. Aries also has The Tower as the card of its ruling planet, Mars, and the 2, 3 and 4 of Wands as its decan cards.
Why does Aries have rams on the Emperor card?
In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, Pamela Colman Smith drew rams' heads on the Emperor's throne because the Golden Dawn assigned the card to Aries, the Ram. Older Marseille decks show the Emperor without rams, because the zodiac link was added later.
Is the Emperor a good card for Aries?
Many readers see it as a close fit. The Emperor describes initiative, leadership and protecting what you have built, which are classic Aries traits. Its warning, control and rigidity, also matches the sign's usual weak spot, so the card works as encouragement and as a check.
