Libra: Justice

The tarot card for Libra is Justice, card 11 in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. The scales in her left hand are Libra's own symbol, so this is the easiest zodiac match in the tarot to spot. Justice also holds an upright sword, and that half of the picture matters for Libra too: fairness that can cut. In the Golden Dawn system Libra shares The Empress with Taurus as its Venus card, and its decans give it the 2 to 4 of Swords. Look up any birthday with the zodiac tarot card finder.

Why Justice is the card of Libra

The Golden Dawn gave Justice the Hebrew letter Lamed, which means ox-goad, the stick a farmer uses to keep an animal on the right path. It is a tool of correction, a good fit for a card about consequences.

The scales are the glyph of Libra, and the sword belongs to air, the element of reasoning. Libra begins autumn at the equinox, when day and night are roughly equal. As a cardinal sign, Libra starts things, and it does so through agreements and partnerships. The Golden Dawn also moved Justice from 8 to 11 so that Libra's card would sit after Leo's in zodiac order; the Strength 8 or Justice 11 guide explains the swap.

What Justice says about Libra

Libra wants things to be fair, and it can usually see why each side thinks it is right. That makes you a natural host, negotiator and peacemaker, the friend who gets two people talking again after a fight. Justice adds a firmer edge than Libra's easygoing reputation suggests. When something is plainly unjust, many Libras will stand up and say so.

Venus, through the Empress, brings a love of beauty and pleasant surroundings, so Libra often has a strong eye for design. The card at its best describes someone who weighs carefully, decides clearly and owns the result.

Libra and Justice in love

Partnership is central to Libra. You want love to be equal and respectful, and you are good at making a partner feel valued and seen. Venus adds romance and a liking for doing things beautifully, from a well-planned date to a thoughtful gift.

The problem is that Libra often avoids conflict to keep the peace, and small imbalances pile up unspoken. Justice says fairness sometimes needs an uncomfortable conversation. Libra relationships do best when effort and decisions are shared and a disagreement is treated as a way to rebalance, not a threat.

Libra and Justice at work

Libra suits work that involves fairness, partnership or beauty: law, mediation, diplomacy, HR, counseling, design, fashion, art, event planning, PR and client-facing roles. You are often the person who can bring two difficult parties to a deal both can live with.

Justice adds a strong ethical sense, so an employer's integrity matters to you. The caution is saying yes to keep everyone happy, or delaying a decision until it is made for you. Writing down your criteria before you weigh the options helps you decide faster and lead with confidence.

The Libra shadow side

Justice's shadow is endless weighing that never lands, or judgment with no mercy in it. For Libra this can look like indecision, people-pleasing, silent scorekeeping in relationships, or avoiding conflict until resentment boils over. Venus can add vanity or too much weight on appearances.

Your middle decan card, the 3 of Swords, shows the heartache that often follows when hard truths are put off. Practice small, clear decisions every day and say no kindly when you need to. Your own needs belong on the scales too.

Your Libra decan card

Libra rules the 2, 3 and 4 of Swords. Born about September 23 to October 2, your decan card is the 2 of Swords (Moon in Libra, titled Peace Restored by the Golden Dawn). About October 3 to 12 is the 3 of Swords (Saturn in Libra, Sorrow). About October 13 to 22 is the 4 of Swords (Jupiter in Libra, Rest from Strife).

In order, they trace how Libra handles conflict: a fragile truce, the pain of facing what was avoided, and the rest that restores balance afterward. Dates at the edges can move by a day.

Working with your sign card

  • Around September 23, lay Justice beside the Empress and ask where in your life giving and receiving feel out of balance.
  • Before a decision, list the factors on each side of the scales, then ask Justice's question: which choice can I stand behind and take responsibility for?
  • For conflicts, use your decan cards: the 2 of Swords for what you are avoiding, the 3 for the truth that hurts, the 4 for the rest you need afterward.
  • Once a week, have one kind, direct conversation where you state your own needs as clearly as you consider other people's.

Frequently asked questions

What tarot card is Libra?

In the Golden Dawn system, Libra is Justice, card 11 in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. Its ruling planet, Venus, is The Empress, and its decan cards are the 2, 3 and 4 of Swords.

Is Libra's tarot card 8 or 11?

Justice is 11 in the Golden Dawn and Rider-Waite-Smith systems, which most modern decks follow. Marseille decks number it 8 and give 11 to Strength. The card for Libra is Justice either way; only the number changes. The Destiny Matrix uses the Marseille numbering, so Justice appears there as 8.

Why do Libra and Taurus share the Empress?

Venus rules both signs in traditional astrology, and the Golden Dawn gave Venus to the Empress. Taurus tends to express Venus through the senses and comfort, Libra through harmony, relationships and design. Each sign also has its own card: the Hierophant for Taurus, Justice for Libra.
